ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens announced a program that will help senior citizens who are struggling to pay their property taxes stay in their homes.

The program is dedicating $250,000 to help qualified homeowners pay their property taxes.

“Our legacy community is the heartbeat of our city,” Mayor Dickens said. “This will help them be able to keep those taxes from being a burden to them.”

Dickens also announced $300,000 that will go towards eviction defense services.

“This is a challenge where people are finding themselves having too much housing cost for their income,” he said.

The announcement was made to a room full of senior citizens, including Vivian Gresham Baity who came to listen and to voice her concerns.

“Lower the rent according to a person’s wage, treat people like you want to be treated, so people will have a place to stay,” she said.

According to city officials, nearly 80 percent of homeowners in Atlanta are worried about their next tax payment. Mayor Dickens has made affordable housing his mission, with 9,000 units already built or under construction.

“I know there are stories from the past of ‘hey we called and nobody picked up’,” Mayor Dickens said. “I’m telling you, we answer the phone and the doors are open at city hall right now to help you.”

You can find the application for property tax assistance on the city’s website under the Office of Constituent Services.
